Learn the Nepali alphabet: reading and writing

Nepali uses the Devanagari script. Begin with a small group of letters, then practise recognising them inside words.

A small first set

Roman spellings are approximate reading aids. English letters cannot represent every Nepali sound precisely. Listen to each model and repeat it rather than relying on the written pronunciation alone.

Independent vowels and vowel signs

A vowel can appear as its own letter or as a sign attached to a consonant. Compare आ with the sign ा in मा. The word आमा (aamaa, mother) begins with the independent vowel and then uses the sign with म.

How to practise handwriting

1. Choose a letter in the writing pad and listen to its sound.
2. Play its guide where an animated guide is available. Pause or slow it down to watch the shape.
3. Trace the visible model, then clear the pad and try again.
4. When ready, turn the trace guide off and draw from memory.

What does the feedback mean?

The app compares your drawing with a model. Gentle learning support encourages tracing inside the guide and recognising the overall shape. A shape-only fallback is labelled where a sourced stroke animation is unavailable. Automated feedback cannot recognise every valid handwriting style, so use it alongside the visible model and feedback from a Nepali speaker or teacher.

Move from letters to words

After practising a letter, look for it in a familiar word. Try आमा (mother) and पानी (water), listening to the full word as well as looking at its written parts.
